We constantly kill people by polluting the air, the earth and the water in our rivers and seas (so far we have not found a way of polluting fire, the fourth element). We could (and we CAN) stop doing so. We could impose and practise pollution-control and make the world safe again. Well, to a point. There are many things beyond our control. One of them is vomiting volcanoes. Another is enormous earthquakes. We may manage to predict their occurrence better, but there’s not much we can do to stop them happening.
“God” could. (WE can’t). But God won’t, because He doesn’t exist. For people who not only say that He does but that He created the world and presumably therefore programed volcanoes and earthquakes, it is hard to explain why He would thereby kill hundreds if not thousands of people, indiscriminately, at a time. The planet needs to let off steam – along with lethal lava – but it didn’t have to be that way. Surely God the Creator, if He could create the world, was a Designer intelligent enough to eliminate the need for volcanic safety-valves. Idem for earthquakes. Why on Earth (!) would a loving God expose His children meaninglessly, for no imaginable purpose, to the permanent threat of annihilation in the volcanic Ring of Fire and along the earthquake seismic faults ? This may be about as close as we will ever get to a “proof” that God does not exist. Not exactly an earth-shaking conclusion, but one that deserves underlining.
