Jews are sub-human. (This is a great example of a potential quotation out of context. Read on before you scream “Anti-semitism !”). Aryans are a superior race. (For some reason, this seems like a more acceptable expression of racism, though we know the consequences it had.) These two statements may serve as a spring-board for a brief reflection on why millions of people accepted those outrageous lies and continue to believe at least one of them.
We believe all sorts of rubbish, some of it just silly stuff like the predictions of fortune-tellers or superstitions ranging from walking under ladders to cats crossing our path, to numbers like 13, which portends good or bad luck depending on the culture you live in. We are ready to believe TV commercials, the promises of politicians and the hype of the salesman hawking weight-loss programs, time-share appartments and all sorts of get-rich-quick schemes. A sucker, they say, is born every day. We believe even that too modest estimate – when in fact we know their name is Legion.
Gullibility, a.k.a. credulity, finds its most extensive expression in the myths and miracles which are religions’ stock-in-trade. Most of us would not think of buying a product or service without questioning its viability, true value and the competitiveness of its cost. But since we were kids (and that may be the origin of the problem) we have naïvely believed the stories of the Bible and accepted the moral directives of its bashers, often with the conviction that one’s usually inherited religion is the only right one. The analogy with racial prejudices of superiority and inferiority, sources of an intolerance than can translate into injustice, exclusion and even terrorism, is inevitable. Prejudice and blind acceptance, reinforced by indoctrination, must be eschewed in favor of individual judgement on the supposed reasons for accepting a given assertion, belief or practice.
Why do you say that Jews are subhuman ? Why do you believe in God ? Why do you accept doctrines and behave the way your religion tells you you must ? Think for yourself, question everything, make up your own mind. Learn to discern, take the time to taste before you swallow – rather than gobble the garbage only the gullible ingest.
